KEEP YOUR BOILER FUNCTIONING THIS WINTER

Emergency boiler repairs and boiler breakdowns can be a nightmare when you least expect them; our boilers run more than ever during the winter because it’s chilly outside and we want our homes to be toasty-warm and comfortable, and servicing your boiler is often overlooked during the warm summer months. This is why it’s critical to make sure your boiler is in good working order, as this is when you’re most likely to need a boiler service or even a boiler breakdown repair. If this happens, you’ll need to be prepared with a boiler repair engineer near you to get things back up and running quickly.

However, there are several preventative measures you can take to assist in keeping it ticking over during the winter.

GET YOUR BOILER SERVICED

Prevention is better than cure, so the saying goes – manufacturers recommend that you get your boiler serviced annually and we agree! By regularly servicing it you’ll ensure that it’s working both safely and efficiently. As well as validating any warranty, a service helps it to perform to the best of its ability and work more efficiently.

By having your boiler inspected once a year you’re more likely to find and fix small issues before they turn into big problems later.

CHECK YOUR BOILER PRESSURE

Thanks to the pressure gauge included on many newer boilers, checking your boiler should be fairly straightforward. The green region on this gauge represents the pressure in your boiler, which should be between 1 and 1.5 bars. If your boiler’s pressure is higher than this, you’ll need to lower it, which you can usually do by bleeding your radiators. If it’s lower, your boiler likely needs to be repressurised, which you can accomplish with your boiler’s refilling loop. If, after the abovementioned actions, the pressure varies and is abnormally high or too low, you should have it checked out by a Gas Safe certified engineer.

CHECK YOUR RADIATORS

Cold spots on your radiators make it difficult to heat your home efficiently; this is most likely due to air trapped in the system or sludge build-up, both of which can lead to boiler problems; getting them running properly before Autumn and Winter will save you the trouble.

To do this, you’ll need to run some tests and perform some basic maintenance, such as bleeding your radiators and double-checking that your thermostats are working properly.

LAG YOUR PIPES TO KEEP THEM FROM FREEZING

Not only are frozen water pipes troublesome, but the pressure built up by frozen water in a pipe can cause a burst pipe, resulting in serious damage to a home’s ceilings, floors, walls and furniture, and unnecessary and expensive repairs. Further, if you have a condensing boiler, they’ll come with a condensate pipe that takes condensed water from your boiler to an outside drain. Ensure this pipe isn’t prone to freezing or it will automatically shut off your boiler when the pump fills up.

If you’re unsure about how your condensing boiler works or need help with freezing pipes, call our professional plumbers in Johnston to help you.

Save yourself the trouble by getting ahead of these potential issues by following the above-mentioned tips.
